Hyde Park Ultrasonic Sensors vs new XX Configurable Sensors

The legacy Hyde Park ultrasonic, and the recent upgrade to the XX Configurable ultrasonic sensors offer an extensive degree of functionality. The former, all through either part number or through field configuration; the latter through field configuration only.  It is this extent of functionality that has been their success, as the products can be made to meet the various needs of the application, rather than forcing the application to meet the capabilities of the sensor.

The “legacy” Hyde Park ultrasonic sensors are offered in both field-configurable and non-field configurable models, depending on the user’s needs.  Traditionally these two forms of products were offered at the same cost, because of their similarity.

The legacy non-field configurable models are for users where the typically know exactly what they want for a specific application, and consequently can identify the desired functionality of a given model.  These users’ needs are relatively fixed, and they re-order the same model or slight variations of the model from time to time.

By comparison, the legacy field-configurable models appeal primarily to large users with a variety of needs within their facility, or those developing prototypes where they need the convenience of being able to easily alter the functionality of a given sensor to optimize the performance to suit the specific needs of the application, and perform that task in-house.  The use of field configurable products greatly reduces the number of products they need to keep in their inventory.  The legacy field-configurable Hyde Park ultrasonic sensors were configured by users with the Hyde Park AC441A-US field configurator, with free software.

The “XX Configurables” are the newest designs of the legacy Hyde Park ultrasonic sensors.  The are essentially an upgrade to the legacy product, with a few notable differences.  As an overview, whereas the legacy Hyde Park ultrasonic sensors were offered either field-configurable on non-field configurable, all of the XX Configurable ultrasonic sensors are field-configurable.  This means fewer sku’s, and every product is offered as a base model that can be changed by Excel Automation, or by the customer if they purchase the field configurator.  They are configured by users with the new, XXZKIT01 field configurator, with new, free software.  The legacy product and the new XX Configurable product require the respective configurator and software.

The most significant changes made with the introduction of the XX Configurable ultrasonic sensors are:

The software is completely new, is easier to understand and utilize to configure the sensor as desired:

  • The user is presented with 4 different modes of operation to select from, which automatically presents the corresponding parameters to select from.
  • With one of two tabs, the user can select whether to setup the sensor parameters and see either a graphic simulation of the sensor’s performance with respect to a virtual target, or see the actual sensor’s output graphically displayed versus distance for both intended targets and un-intended targets.
  • There are factory default icons to select for the majority of parameters, so the user will always be able to readily return to, and understand what was the default setting of that parameter.
  • Each parameter is given a more complete definition/explanation.

All new designs use a 5-pin M12 male connector on their body

All new designs with discrete outputs are offered with PNP/sinking only.

All new designs have larger dead-bands

New models include a 4 meter range model is offered in a 30 mm body, and a new 1 meter model is in an 18 mm body.  The 18 and 30 mm designs include straight or 90 degree sensing heads.

All new designs do not have an integral push-button, but the same function can be achieved with an external, XXZPB100 in-line programing switch.  This design eliminates tampering with the parameters by unauthorized individuals.

Since all models are essentially base models, the product label identifies the base model, not the specifics of how it may have been ultimately configured by the user.

All new designs are totally configured via the field configurator interconnecting cables.  The new sensors do not have to be physically brought in close proximity to the configurator to initiate the configuration process.
