Why LSR needs Watt-Flex®

Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) injection involves mixing silicone liquid components (A & B) and pigment in a cooled static mixing barrel then injected into a heated tool.  Heating in the LSR process occurs at the tool and therefore requires (even consistent heat) to avoid problems like uncured parts, misaligned tool components, and partially cured silicone in the tooling.  (see diagrams below)

One can imagine the difficulties LSR operators might encounter using conventional heaters that produce uneven “roller-coaster-looking” temperature profiles.  LSR operators we talked to say, uneven heat leads to close tolerance tools binding up due to differing thermal expansion, parts not cured in some sections of the tool and generally creating problems for operators.  Partially cured parts clog up the tooling and may lead to taking the tool out for complete clean out, taking up to 24 hours to perform.
